Open Water Scuba Instructor Course (OWSI)
Instructor Crossover Course


The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course is designed to prepare qualified candidates to become PADI Instructors. This course is scheduled during the second half of the Instructor Development Course (IDC). Either the OWSI course or the entire IDC must be completed before attending the PADI Instructor Examination (IE).
Scuba instructors certified by other organizations may cross over to PADI by successfully completing the OWSI course and the IE.
Combining the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the OWSI course into a continuous program makes up the entire IDC.

Entry Requirements:

  • PADI Assistant Instructor OR current Instructor member in good standing with another recreational diver training organization and completion of PADI eLearning Instructor Development Online Program
  • Proof of Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and Divemaster certifications or equivalents
  • Certified Open Water Diver for at least 6 months
  • First Aid & CPR training within the last 24 months (PADI Emergency First Response is recommended)
  • Diving Accident Insurance (DAN is preferred)
  • Diving Medical Statement signed by a physician and dated within the last 12 months
  • Proof of at least 60 logged open water scuba dives
  • Proof of experience in deep, night & navigation diving

18 years

Single hose regulator with alternate air source device
Submersible pressure gauge (computers are acceptable)
Depth gauge (computers are acceptable)

Bottom timing device (computers are acceptable)
Water resistant timing device (watch with second hand)
Weight belt and weights
Dive knife or tool
Audible surface signaling device (whistle or other noise maker)
Visible surface signaling device (tube or mirror)
Underwater signaling device
Pencil and underwater slate
Underwater light
Lift bag
Two pieces rope for knot tying
Pocket mask

Schedule & Dates:
We offer a convenient format, for you to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
Our program is conducted over a three week period on evenings and weekends.

Certification Awarded:
Upon successful completion of the OWSI, candidates are eligible to go through the PADI Instructor Evaluation (IE). Once a candidate has passed the IE they will become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI).

Note: Proof of 100 logged dives is required to take the PADI IE
Candidates who are not PADI Divemasters are also required to pass the diver rescue skills assessment.
